The San Francisco 49ers:
While the Carolina Panthers arguably represents the best scheme fit for Deshaun Watson, the San Francisco 49ers are not very far behind.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan has proven to be quite an elaborate play-caller and has had some success in his brief coaching career. He reached the Super Bowl in his second season, but fell to the Kansas City Chiefs.
The 49ers also have a numerous amount of weapons at their disposal in the skill positions. Wide receivers Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk have added a great element of speed in the rushing game and have doubled well as traditional pass-catchers. While current QB Jimmy Garoppolo has been a solid option and a winning presence that the team has desperately needed, the team has been mum on his future and there has been much speculation that the 49ers may select a quarterback with their No. 3 overall pick. Garappolo’s contract is also highly escapeable as the Niners would only incur a $2.8 million cap hit if they release or trade him before June 1st. They would also save almost $24 million in cap space for doing so which could make Jimmy G tough to justify keeping. If you combine that with his injury history and limited upside, 2021 could see Jimmy Garappolo play a less pivotal role with the 49ers.
Deshaun Watson would make a great fit with Shanahan’s offense that maximizes the athleticism of his skill position players. Aiyuk and Samuel are dynamic runners with the ball, adding another dangerous runner in Watson could add to the embarrassment of riches of offensive firepower for the 49ers.
